Glastonbury, possibly one of the biggest projects on the UK calendar?

Glasto_2023

Glastonbury is the UKs largest music festival with over 200,000 attendees and a star-studded lineup, but we have to ask the question, is it a project?

The Glastonbury project team succeed year after year

A small countryside town in Somerset sounds bizarre to host such a large scale event, but as with every great project, plans, risk strategies and a business case are all created and maintained to ensure the event runs smoothly. Rain or shine, the organisers have it covered. The meticulous detail the project team go into ensure that “Project Glastonbury” remains desirable, viable and achievable at all times.

Stakeholder support, the key to project success!

Additionally, the town of Glastonbury is home to just 9,000 people, but what important stakeholders they are to have on side! Event trucks, commercial traders and public traffic all building up before, during and after the festival means that clear communication is vital to prevent a gridlock. It is never going to be a quiet weekend with an event like this, but “Project Glastonbury” organisers do everything they can to keep everybody happy and enjoying the festival, especially through their eco campaigns such as “leave no trace”. The owners know, Glastonbury festival would be nothing without the support of the people and key stakeholders.

Scheduling the acts: the backbone of any festival!

Finally, we take our hats off to whoever is responsible for the booking and scheduling of acts. To gather artists such as Guns n’ Roses, the Arctic Monkeys and Sir Elton John has got to be one hard task, but then to plan their stage times months in advance to ensure crowd control is put in place, oh wow what a skill! The main acts are just a fraction of the activity that takes place at Glastonbury. The Pyramid stage, acoustic stage, John Peel stage, and many more sites each need sufficient planning and resource management.

Of course one thing they have on their side… learning from years gone by and seeing what went well and what could be improved. Simply, Lessons learned! Sir Eltons performance drew what is potentially the largest Glasto crowd of all time, and the organizers themselves have commented that “it was only made possible through studying how The Rolling Stones ran their performances”.

So all in all, yes Glastonbury very much is a project, and a rather cool one at that!
