Why I Like PRINCE2 Agile, by Julia Gosse

I have been working with PRINCE2® before it became PRINCE2® and for the last 10 years I have been a PRINCE2® trainer and consultant so I am already sold on PRINCE2®. I have also been a software developer and used agile development methods and have never seen the two as being in conflict. The PRINCE2 Agile® guide has been created to provide guidance for blending the PRINCE2® project management approach with agile delivery methods. The PRINCE2 Agile® approach brings together the strength of PRINCE2® and the flexibility of agile delivery methods that can be used across all industry sectors.

PRINCE2 Agile® is not a replacement for PRINCE2®. All elements of PRINCE2® are valid within PRINCE2 Agile®. It is an extension to PRINCE2®. The guide gives advice and guidance on agile behaviours, concepts, frameworks and techniques that can be used within a project context.

The Agile approaches

PRINCE2 Agile® does not favour any one agile approach but it does concentrate on how to incorporate the most popular frameworks of SCRUM and strong Kanban. It also promotes the concepts of Lean Startup. I like the fact that it can incorporate whatever flavour of agile you may be using but also if you are just starting out on your agile journey it has enough agile guidance to get you started and using the most popular frameworks.

The 6 aspects of project performance

The six aspects of project performance that need to managed are presented in PRINCE2 Agile® as a hexagon highlighting the agile drivers of delivering on time and to budget. PRINCE2 Agile® is built upon the concept of flexing the scope of what is to be delivered to protect the timescale and budget.

The 5 behaviours

There are 5 Behaviours that the project board and project manager will need to monitor across the project management team and delivery teams to ensure that agile is operating in the most effective way.

The Agilometer

The main questions to be asked at the beginning of a project are just how agile do we want to be and how agile can we be? In order to help assess the current situation and the risks involved with the approach you choose an “Agilometer“ has been created as a guide to help you make the right decision as to the suitability of using an agile approach. Once an assessment is made then an action plan can be drawn up to improve the sliders and shift them further to the right.

PRINCE2 Agile® promotes five targets that sum up the agile way of thinking and working:

o Be on time and hit deadlines

o Embrace change

o Protect the level of quality

o Accept that the customer doesn’t need everything

o Protect the level of quality

The next steps for PRINCE2 Agile®?

It is exciting times in the world of PRINCE2 Agile® with the continued success of PRINCE2 Agile® Foundation. Previously, delegates wishing to study the method would need to be PRINCE2 qualified, so that the method was more of an extension of PRINCE2®. Now delegates can choose this new entry route to PRINCE2 Agile®.This means that delegates who have no prior knowledge of PRINCE2® can join the PRINCE2 Agile® community.

Prerequisites for PRINCE2 Agile® Practitioner:

  • PRINCE2® Foundation
  • PRINCE2® Practitioner
  • Project Management Professional® (PMP)
  • Certified Associate in Project Management® (CAPM)
  • IMPA Levels A,B,C and D® (Certified Projects Director)
